Overview

Course Description

This course is designed for neurosurgeons, neurosurgery advanced practice providers (APPs), neurologists, intensivists, emergency medicine physicians, and trainees in this field. It provides information about state-of-the-art diagnosis, workup and first-line treatments for neurosurgical emergencies. Covered in detail are: resuscitation, advances in stroke management, the ever-changing landscape of anticoagulation, TBI, spine trauma, postoperative management, prognosis, and treatments in austere environments. Learning will be enhanced with active teaching techniques including case-based discussions as well as instruction by world experts.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe and discriminate state-of-the-art treatment for neurosurgical emergencies including emergency department resuscitation and imaging.
  2. Apply up-to-date stroke management for patients with hemorrhage or ischemic stroke including aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
  3. Execute correct anticoagulation reversal and initiation in the setting of an intracranial hemorrhage.
  4. Assemble an effective team to treat neurosurgical emergencies including APPs.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of prognosis and apply this to family discussions.
